The Course

The course will be led by Maestro Marcello Giordano Pellegrino with the assistance of Peter Fender.  You will choose 3 arias by the principal Italian opera composers (e.g. Verdi, Puccini, Donizetti, Bellini, Mascagni, Leoncavallo, Rossini) and will work on them with Maestro Pellegrino during the course. At the end of the Sunday sessions an informal concert will be given, where each student will perform one aria, with piano (a pianist will be in attendance for the whole course).  Outstanding singers will be considered by Maestro Pellegrino for participation in a series of concerts in Italy.

The main focus of the weekend will be to work on your chosen arias. To facilitate this, and your development as an opera singer in general, you will work on areas such as: vocal technique exercises; solfeggio for singers; diction/articulation; developing a character; stage craft; score interpretation; preparing for auditions.

Maestro Pellegrino studied the operatic arts in Catania and Parma, and his opera credits include the lead tenor roles in the great Italian bel canto operas both in Italy and beyond - for example, La forza del Destino, Aida, Norma, Don Giovanni, La Traviata, L'elisir d'Amore, I Vespri Siciliani, Luisa Miller.  He has collaborated with many great Italian singers, directors and composers such as Placido Domingo, Riccardo Muti, Riccardo Chailly, Nicola Piovani and Franco Zefferelli.  He has taught singing both in his native Sicily and throughout Italy for many years.  He is also an accomplished pianist.  He often coaches singers for auditions and helps them prepare roles for various opera houses and opera festivals, and is therefore well connected to those houses and festivals in Italy and in other countries.
