Masterworks Unwrapped

Masterworks Unwrapped is a series of online Zoom sessions
delving into some great works of classical music

NB: All sessions are on Tuesdays 7.30-9.30pm (London, UK, GMT+1)

19 May: JS Bach, Wachet Auf!

26 May: Lili Boulanger, D'un soir triste / D'un matin de printemps

2 June: Mendelssohn, Violin Concerto

16 June: Mahler, Symphony No.1 ('Titan')

23 June: Vivaldi, Four Seasons

30 June: Mahler, Symphony No.4

7 July: Mussorgsky, Pictures at an Exhibition

14 July: Messiaen, L'Ascension

21 July: Ethel Smyth, The Wreckers

NB: If you would like to attend but can't do so, please sign up as normal and send a message to request a copy of the recording, which will be available a few days after each session.

NB2: Online content to complement recordings (pictures, music examples etc) is available here.

I will paint a picture of the background to the music - including, as appropriate, looking into the composer's life and the social context of the day - and will delve into the music itself to see what makes it tick. Excerpts will be played to illustrate my thoughts, plus the music will be played in its entirety. There will be the opportunity to ask questions. No musical expertise will be assumed, but it would be worth doing the preparation of listening to the music in advance.

An individual session costs £10; any 3 for £25.  Use the PayPal button below to make your choice and pay the relevant amount. You don't need a PayPal account to do this. If you choose 'any 3' of the sessions, I will send an email to check which exact ones you want to attend.

The day before each meeting you will receive a Zoom link (please check your Junk mailbox if necessary). You just need to click that link and follow any instructions. Any other technical things will be explained at the start of each session.

I also run sessions for conductors (or those who are interested in conducting). These are on Friday evenings. For details:

If you've not used Zoom before click the link 5/10 minutes before the session start time as your computer (or tablet or phone) will need a little time to install the software to enable you to join (follow the prompts that you get to effect that installation).  Finally you will receive the message 'Please wait, the meeting host will let you in soon'. Please note that you don't need to sign up for a Zoom account.
